During the year 1000 AD. Sicily was dominated by the Normans, headed by Count Roger I;
his daughter Giulietta, who lived in Sciacca, was in love with her cousin Robert of Basseville, but
Count Roger did not approve of their love… so the two lovers fled in search of a place where they
could hide and declare their mutual love. They then found the Rocca Sant’Elmo and would remain
there until the count forgave them. Thanks to the intercession of a hermit, friar Mauro, the two
lovers were forgiven by Ruggero and finally got married! As a wedding gift, Count Roger gave Juliet
the city of Sciacca, and Rocca Sant’Elmo was renamed Rocca Regina in her honour
